Lorne wants to ask Cordelia about her experience as a higher being, but Angel things that it is too soon, that they should give her some time to recover. Fred and Gunn avoid the conversation and leave to investigate a haunted toilet.
Cordelia is at Connor's squat watching an old horror film when Connor returns with food. He tries to get her to rest. She tells him that every time she tries to sleep she sees that something evil is coming, something that no one is safe from. She can't bring herself to tell Angel about it, but does not know why. The demon appears and grabs her by the throat. She wakes up from her dream.
Fred and Gunn arrive at the house and find a bathroom "big enough for a family of 4 to live in". They hear noises and investigate. Suddenly the room is swarming with rats and they panic. They both escape and tell the homeowner to either get an exterminator or burn the house down.
Wesley arrives home and finds Lilah dressed up and impersonating Fred. She says she doesn't care about Wesley's crush on Fred, as she knows that he will be with her at the end of the day. They make love.
Fred and Gunn return to the hotel. Their relationship is still stressed, ever since Gunn killed the professor to prevent Fred from doing so. Angel Investigations is very busy. Lorne, again, tries to convince Angel to bring Cordelia back to help when Connor walks in.
Angel thanks Connor for protecting Cordelia from Angelus [in S4-06 Spin the Bottle]. Connor wants Angel to talk to Cordelia, and Lorne agrees with him. Angel is reluctant, but Connor calls him dad and he agrees.
Angel goes to the squat and Cordelia is upset with Connor for talking to Angel, but she is actually glad to see him. She tells him that she will always love him, but she can't be with him. As a higher being she lived Angelus' life and that of his victims. She felt his victims' pain and his enjoyment of it. She says that, may be, in time they could be together, but not yet.
Cordelia has a vision that the demon she has dreamed of is coming. She thinks that she knew more about the demon when she was a higher being, but can't remember the details. At the hotel, Lorne and Gunn are both answering calls, they are overwhelmed with cases. Lorne is talking to Gunn about his (Gunn) and Fred's relationship when a swarm of sparrows fly into the hotel walls and windows, killing themselves.
At Wolfram and Hart, Lilah is getting reports of a 300% increase in activity in the last hour. She walks into her office to find Angel waiting for her. She starts the conversation by asking how Lorne is and then continues to tell Angel that he won't get anything out of her. Angel points out Gavin, behind her, whom he has already tortured and got most of the information he wanted from. Wolfram and Hart's psychics die every time that they analyse a piece of the information they stole from Lorne. Angel realises that Wolfram and Hart did not know about the coming demon, that it threatens their plans. He suggests that they help each other so that he can stop the demon and she can save Wolfram and Hart's plan.
Connor returns to the squat just as Cordelia is about to leave to find out where the demon is going to appear. She can't remember why she was sent back to be mortal again. Connor goes with her to find the demon. Cordelia finds the place where the demon will appear - the place where Darla staked herself and where Connor was born. The ground breaks and the demon rises.
Connor attacks the demon, but is beaten back. The demon grabs Cordelia by the throat and Connor attacks it again. Connor is thrown across the street. After one, last, look at Cordelia the demon jumps into the air and disappears. Connor is injured.
Back at the hotel, Lorne and Gunn are about to leave to find Fred when Wesley arrives. Wesley wants to pool their information to find out what is happening. Gunn is hostile to him and about to leave to find Fred when Angel returns and stops him. Lilah gave Angel all the information that Wolfram and Hart were able to decipher from Lorne. Angel, Gunn and Wesley go through the information while Lorne plots all of the calls they have been receiving on a map.
Wesley is about to give up on the papers when Gunn spots something. They arrange the papers like a jigsaw and it reveals an ancient symbol of fire. Lorne's map is complete and the plotted calls show the same symbol.
Fred has been sitting in a cafe drinking coffee all day. The waitress is trying to cheer her up and telling her that things can't be that bad when the building starts shaking. Cordelia is back at the squat treating Connor's wounds when that building starts to shake.
The hotel starts shaking. Angel, Gun, Wesley and Lorne have plotted the centre on the symbol on the map. They leave to find and kill whatever is there. When they arrive, they find the demon surrounded by dead bodies in the shape of the symbol. They attack, but are easily beaten. Angel is stabbed by his own knife (and thrown off the building?). The demon ignites the bodies, creating a column of fire and disappears.
Cordelia and Angel see the column from the squat and a "Rain of Fire" begins. Connor is concerned that he should have stopped the demon, that it is here because of him, the impossible child of two vampires. Cordelia tells him that it is not because of him. They kiss. Cordelia tells Connor that he never had a childhood or friends, or anything that was real. She wants him to have one thing that is real before the world ends.
The rain of fire is all over the city. Cordelia and Connor make love. Angel is watching from the building across the street.
