Willow tells Giles that his, borrowed, power is not enough to defeat her. She reminds him of their conversation in [S6-04 Flooded] when he called her a "rank arrogant amateur". She is about to attack him, but he creates a binding field that contains her and renders her almost unconscious. She warns him that the field won't hold her forever. In the back room, Giles tells Buffy how a coven leant him their powers to stop Willow. Buffy tells him about everything that has happened since he left, ending on the subject of her and Spike. Giles can't stop laughing. Buffy joins him.
Anya is cleaning up the shop. Willow attempts to use mind control to get Anya to release her. Giles tells Buffy that the coven are working on a way of removing Willow's powers without killing her, just as a freed Willow (with an unconscious Anya) walks into the room. Buffy does not even get a chance to fight before Willow knocks her out. Willow and Giles fight.
Xander and Dawn are walking Jonathan and Andrew somewhere - Xander does not know where he is going, but he carries on walking and complaining how useless he is. Dawn says that Spike would go back and fight, to which Xander replies "Sure, if he wasn't too busy trying to rape your sister".
Spike completes one test and anther one starts - with beetles crawling all over him and up his nose.
The magic shop is largely demolished in the fight. Giles asks Willow what Tara would have thought of her actions. Willow almost kills Giles, but Buffy just saves him. Willow sends a fireball to find and kill Jonathan and Andrew. Buffy follows it, trying to get to them first.
Willow lectures Giles, while bouncing him from floor to ceiling. He attempts to fight back, but Willow drains his power for herself. She can sense everyone and their emotions. It is too much for her. She says the suffering must end and she disappears.
Xander is looking for a hiding place in the graveyard when Dawn sees the fireball. Buffy saves Jonathan and Andrew by inches. But, the fireball opens a hole in the ground into which Buffy and Dawn fall. Xander is unconscious, so Jonathan and Andrew run off to leave Sunnydale.
Anya recovers and finds Giles on the floor. He tells her that he can see Willow, that he is dying and that Willow is going to end the world. Buffy can't climb out of the hole. Dawn asks Buffy about Spike. She tells Buffy that she does not want Buffy to "protect" her from the truth any longer. Anya teleports to the hole to tell them that Willow is going to end the world at a buried temple.
Willow raises the temple from the ground. Anya tells them that Willow is going to burn the entire Earth. She leaves telling them that Giles may not have much time left. Willow, from miles away, talks to Buffy. Willow decides that Buffy should die fighting and monsters come out of the walls of the hole. Buffy and Dawn fight them together.
Willow begins her spell and the earth begins to shake. Xander interrupts Willow's spell by breaking the beam of power she is channelling. Dawn proves to be proficient with a sword, to Buffy's surprise.
Willow starts her spell again and Xander breaks it again. He talks to her about their friendship, their past. She attacks him, but her powers fade. She breaks down crying in his arms and returns to her former self. The monsters in the hole turn to dust. Giles recovers and tells Anya that he planned for Willow to take his powers so that they could, with Xander's help, reach Willow's remaining humanity.
Anya is surprised to learn that Xander saved the world. Buffy resolves her differences with Dawn, and with being alive. Spike passes his trials and is given his soul back. [Ed: Not quite what he wanted?]
