A band starts playing at the Bronze. Buffy is patrolling, Spike is at the bar in the Bronze, Willow is in the library and Dawn is alone at home. A new vampire begins to rise from the grave. Jonathan and Andrew drive back into Sunnydale, with a plan.
Jonathan and Andrew drive back into Sunnydale, with a plan. Buffy fights the vampire. Dawn is eating pizza, playing with weapons, doing minor damage to the house and generally enjoying herself. She hears a noise.
In the library, Cassie (who died in [S7-04 Help]) appears and starts talking to Willow. She has brought a message from Tara.
Dawn is on the telephone and watching TV when she hears the noise again. The front door blows open and the TV won't turn off - even when she unplugs it from the mains. The vampire stops fighting Buffy when he recognises her from school. Dawn smashes the TV and stereo to turn them off, the microwave explodes and she hears Joyce call her name.
Buffy and the vampire talk, he was a Psychology student before he died. They talk about school and old acquaintances. Buffy dropped her mobile phone during the fight and does not hear Dawn ringing for help. Dawn puts the phone down and Joyce is lying, still dead, on the sofa. She is not there when Dawn turns around. The noises start again and the lights flicker on and off. Dawn realises that someone, or something is there. She tells them to knock once for yes, twice for no and asks if it is Joyce. It is, but she is not alone.
Jonathan and Andrew break into the school, to get proof of what they know about the evil that is coming and to help the Scooby Gang save the world - at least that is what Andrew has told Jonathan. They split up and Andrew meets up with Warren (still dead). Warren and Andrew have their own plans. They plan to become gods and Jonathan is their unknowing pawn.
Cassie tells Willow that Tara can't come herself because of what Willow has done. Willow talks to Tara through Cassie. Spike is still at the bar and Buffy is getting psychotherapy from the vampire. Buffy and the vampire are getting on very well. Buffy is unhappy that she has to kill him. As she is talking to him about her last boyfriend, he hits her with a statue and tries to bite her. They fight again.
Dawn tries to talk to the demon that is hurting Joyce. It attacks her and tries to get her to leave the house. She refuses to leave Joyce.
Jonathan and Andrew find the basement room that they are looking for and begin digging. Buffy is about to stake the vampire, but stops when he makes a sarcastic comment. He is enjoying the fighting. He asks if her last boyfriend was a vampire.
Spike has left the Bronze with a woman. Cassie tells Willow that she and Tara can see Willow's path and that Willow must stop using magic completely, that she cannot take the chance of loosing control again. Cassie says that Tara says that Willow is going to kill everybody. Jonathan and Andrew have found the artefact that they were looking for.
Dawn begins a spell to cast out the demon. But, it fights back, attacking her and destroying more of the room. Buffy and the vampire are still talking, about how she is beneath her friends, not worthy of them and better than them. They decide to fight again and Buffy lets it slip that Spike was her boyfriend.
Despite the attacks, Dawn completes the spell and casts out the demon. Joyce appears.
Cassie tells Willow that she must not even cast one more spell if she is to avoid her fate. Willow is not certain that she is strong enough and Cassie suggests that she could join Tara... in death. Willow wants to know who Cassie is.
The vampire tells Buffy that Spike sired him. Spike drinks the woman that he walked home from the Bronze. Joyce tells Dawn that things are coming. She says that when the situation gets bad, Buffy will be against Dawn, not with her.
Andrew, with Warren watching, stabs Jonathan while he is standing on the artefact. Cassie mocks Willow and tries again to get her to commit suicide. Willow comments "From beneath it devours". Cassie says "Not it. Me" then disappears. Dawn is home alone, Jonathan's blood covers the artefact, Spike finishes drinking the woman and Buffy stakes the vampire.
