Buffy arranges for Spike to leave the basement and stay with Xander. The next day, while watching the school [American] football training session, Buffy explains to Dawn that she doesn't love Spike, but she feels for him. Dawn claims not to understand why people in relationships do stupid things - then she notices one of the players, stares and falls off her seat.
Buffy saves Anya from a demon in her own apartment. At school, Dawn tries to talk to the player, RJ, while he is talking to another player and two cheerleaders, one of whom is injured. She embarrasses herself, but carries on anyway. The next day, Dawn tries out as a cheerleader. She falls over and embarrasses herself even more in front of RJ.
Back home, she locks herself in the bathroom, then tells Buffy and Xander that she loves RJ. Buffy suggests that it is a crush, but Dawn tells her that she (Buffy) does not know what real love is.
The next day, RJ is dropped as starting quarterback. Dawn pushes his replacement down some stairs and then denies doing it when asked by Principal Wood. Principal Wood believes her, but Buffy is suspicious.
Afterwards RJ finds Dawn (he knows exactly what she did) and asks her if she wants to meet him after practice. At the Bronze with Willow and Xander, Buffy sees RJ dancing with a girl who Buffy describes as a "slutbag hussie" - because of what she is wearing and how she is dancing. The girl turns around - it's Dawn.
At the bar, Buffy tells Dawn that she is glad that Joyce can't see what Dawn is doing and Dawn accuses Buffy of being jealous. Dawn leaves the Bronze and is attacked outside by one of the cheerleaders who tells her to stay away from RJ.
At school, as RJ is leaving Principal Wood's office after being caught cheating on his homework, Buffy talks to him. She starts off as the angry sister. But, at the end of the conversation, she is looking at RJ the same way Dawn does.
When Dawn gets home, Buffy lies to her to get her to back off from RJ. Buffy calls RJ out of class the next day and takes him to an empty classroom. Dawn, looking for RJ, sees them through the window and runs out of the school.
Xander finds Dawn, who tells him that she never wants to see Buffy again. Xander finds Buffy, slightly less dressed than before, on top of RJ on a desk.
Back at the house Buffy and Dawn argue while Xander, Willow and Anya look for a cure to whatever love spell they are both under the influence of. Xander knows RJ's older bother, so he and Spike go to see him.
They find out that RJ's jacket was passed down from his brother who was given it by his father. RJ calls at Buffy's house. Willow and Anya tell him to go away, but they both fall in love with him as he is walking away.
The four girls argue over him and then split up to prove that they each love him the most: Willow is going to use magic to turn him into a girl; Buffy is going to kill Principal Wood (with a bazooka); Anya is going to rob a bank and Dawn lies across a railway track to kill herself.
Xander and Spike interrupt Willow's spell and she tells them about Buffy. Spike stops Buffy. Buffy saves Dawn. Xander and Spike mug RJ and take his jacket. Back at the house, they burn the jacket and the spell is broken. They are all friends again. Anya turns off a radio news bulletin about a bank robbery.
