Buffy and Dawn are learning to cope on their own, with a little help from Giles. Buffy is concerned that by becoming a better slayer she is losing herself. Giles suggests she undertakes a quest. Spike's robot Buffy, which he ordered in [S5-15 I Was Made To Love You], is ready!
Glory is running out of time to find The Key, so she has her demons watch Buffy and her friends. Giles takes Buffy away from Sunnydale and into the desert to begin her quest. Spike is enjoying his new robot. Giles summons Buffy's guide to take her to the secret location in the, familiar, desert.
The gang are looking after Dawn. After a night of passion with Spike, robot Buffy goes out to slay vampires. It meets Xander and Anya, who are on patrol. Spike arrives in time to pretend it is the real Buffy. Everyone, except Giles and the real Buffy, is being watched by Glory's demons.
Xander, Anya and the demons see Spike and the robot "together" in the graveyard. They all believe it's the real Buffy. Xander and Anya go back to tell Willow and Tara that Buffy is going mad.
On her quest, Buffy meets her guide in the form of the first slayer. Xander goes to Spike's and accuses him of taking advantage of Buffy. But, Glory's demons turn up and take Spike, believing that he is The Key. Buffy gets advice from her guide, but doesn't understand it.
Robot Buffy can't find Spike, so it goes to looking for him. It has an interesting (hilarious!) conversation with Willow. Xander arrives with news of Spike's kidnapping. Tara stays to look after Dawn and the rest of the gang leave to find Spike before he tells Glory about Dawn.
Buffy's guide tells her that love will lead her to her gift and that death is her gift. She is confused. Glory looks for The Key in Spike - literally. The gang go to Buffy's house to get weapons. Seconds after robot Buffy goes upstairs to change clothes, the real Buffy arrives back home. When Anya accuses her of having sex with Spike, she gets even more confused. At least, until robot Buffy returns. At which point, any thought of what Spike was doing with the robot is forbidden.
They all go in search of Glory and Spike. Glory is interrogating Spike and he agrees to tell her who the key is. The gang start looking for Glory from the field where Buffy killed the monster snake in [S5-08 Shadow]. Spike lies to Glory and tells her The Key is a TV game show presenter. Spike insults Glory and she kicks him through a wall.
The gang arrive to rescue him from Glory's demons, but robot Buffy is damaged in the fight. Buffy goes to Spike's and pretends to be the robot. She bluffs and offers to tell Glory who The Key is so that he doesn't get hurt again. He stops her to prevent Dawn being killed and Buffy getting hurt. She kisses him and he realises she is not the robot. She leaves, promising not to forget what he did for her and Dawn.
