Joyce is in the hospital having the scan while Buffy and Dawn wait for news. The magic shop has a new advert in the telephone directory, which causes problems later.
Glory is given a long lost spell to find the key. Riley arrives at Buffy's house to find Spike sniffing her sweater. Riley throws him out, but not before Spike winds him up by telling him that Buffy won't love him now he is a normal human being.
While Riley is looking after Dawn, Buffy finds out that Joyce has a brain tumour (a shadow on the scan results, hence the episode title). While the gang are researching Glory, she comes into the shop and Giles sells her the ingredients for the spell. Anya discovers what Giles has done and asks him "Are you stupid?".
Buffy wants a healing spell to help her mother, but Giles tells her that it is not possible. Glory uses the spell to transform a cobra into a monster to seek the key. Buffy interrupts the spell and attacks Glory. Buffy looses, again.
Riley is still feeling left out by Buffy and goes back to the demon bar. The monster finds the key (Dawn) in the magic shop and leaves to reveal this to Glory. Buffy follows it and kills it just before it reaches Glory.
