The monks who are protecting "The Key" have hidden it to keep it safe from a demon. While on patrol, Buffy finds a glowing orb near a factory.
Joyce is still waiting for her test results and Giles has re-opened the magic shop. Dawn tells Riley that Buffy does not want him to patrol with her so she doesn't have to look after him.
While at the hospital, collecting her mother's prescription, Buffy sees the security guard from the factory - he is now, rambling, but seeing the truth - she thinks there is a connection to her mother's illness.
The demon, latter known as Glory, is interrogating one of the monks at the factory. Buffy goes into a trance to see what spell is affecting her mother. She sees that there is no spell on her mother, but Dawn did not and should not exist.
Buffy goes back to the factory, meets Glory, fights her and looses. Business is going too well so Giles offers Anya a job at the shop.
The dying monk reveals that they transformed the key into human form - Dawn - and created everyone's memories of her. Even Dawn does not know what she is.
