Xander is cleaning up, preparing to replace the windows - again. The gang are researching The First Evil and finding nothing. Without information, they can't rescue Spike. Buffy sees Joyce and assumes that she is The First, then she wakes up from her dream. The first still holds Spike captive. The First (as Spike and then Drusilla) tells the ancient vampire (the Turok-Han) to attack Spike.
Andrew, eventually, wakes up and leads the gang to the seal. Buffy stops Andrew and Xander arguing and the gang bury the seal again. On the way out, Buffy and Dawn meet Principal Wood. Buffy and Principal Wood exchange fake excuses as to why they are both carrying spades.
Back at the house, Willow is preparing ingredients in a bowl for a spell to locate The First. But, before it is complete The First attacks her. She is saved by Xander smashing the bowl. Willow is afraid to try again.
Giles arrives at the house with 3 potential slayers: Annabelle, Molly and Kennedy. The First's agents have been killing all the potential slayers and their watchers. There are only a handful of potential slayers left. Buffy realises that she and Faith are next on the list. If The First succeeds, there will never be another slayer.
Giles tells them that the Watcher's Council was destroyed when their office exploded. But, he did manage to steal some of their documents which refer to The First. Giles tells them that The First can change shape and that it can only take the form of someone who is dead. [Ed: This is important information for the gang and for viewers!]
Giles also tells them that it is not corporeal so it can't touch anything - it can only use others to do physical work, like the cloaked men (the Bringers). He does not know how to fight it, The First is not just evil, it is the thing that created evil. He tells Buffy that she is the only one with the strength to save the world, again. Kennedy is not impressed with Giles' plan, or lack thereof.
The First, via the Turok-Han, continues to torture Spike.
Giles and Buffy walk in Sunnydale, it is nearly Christmas, and they talk about the first time that she saw The First. Willow and Kennedy are sorting out the sleeping arrangements, but Kennedy takes over and decides to sleep in Willow's room. The PS's [Ed: "potential slayers" is going to take too long to write every time for the next dozen episodes.] dig into boxes of cookies to relax.
Buffy and Giles search for the entrance to the cave where Buffy saw The First. Buffy finds the entrance by falling through it. She searches the cave. The Turok-Han finds her and they fight. She stakes it, but it simply pulls the stake out. The fight starts going badly for Buffy and she just about escapes from the cave, without Giles' help. The sun is rising and the Turok-Han does not follow her out.
Buffy and Giles arrive at the house and find the SP's having an early breakfast. Giles tells them about the Turok-Han, Neanderthal vampires - the vampires that vampires fear. Molly asks what the Turok-Han wants and Buffy tells her - all of them dead. Buffy does not sleep, she goes straight to work.
Pricipal Wood catches Buffy searching for evil on a search engine and she covers up by claiming she was looking for horror movies. He starts talking to her about true evil and how, once you've seen it, you can never forget it. Without explaining he goes back to his office.
Spike, badly beaten, is still being tortured by The First (as Drusilla). The First tries to convince Spike to join it, but he tells it to "get bent". The Turok-Han continues beating him.
Buffy is in the toilets at Sunnydale High, tending to her wounds when she is suddenly back home talking to Joyce, who tells her she has to heal and that there are some things she can't control. Joyce tells her that evil is a part of everyone and no one can stop it... Buffy wakes up to find that she fell asleep while talking to a student, whose name she can't even remember. Principal Wood is watching her through his window.
It is almost sunset and the gang are arming themselves for the night. Willow apologises to Buffy for everything she has done in the past and for not being able to use her powers effectively recently. She tells Buffy that she (Buffy) needs help, even if she won't admit it. Kennedy wants the SP's to be armed and Buffy, reluctantly, agrees. She refuses to untie Andrew, even though he claims that he is no longer evil.
Giles is trying to reassure Buffy when Molly tells them that Annabelle has run away. Annabelle runs straight into the Turok-Han outside a factory. Buffy follows her only to find her body. Buffy is attacked by the Turok-Han. The fight moves inside the factory and Buffy is being thoroughly beaten. She drops a pallet of steel pipes on the Turok-Han, but even that does not slow it down. It throws her through a wall and leaves her for dead under a pile of rubble.
Xander, Willow and Giles find her under the rubble, unconscious, with her face half covered in her own blood. Spike tells The First that it can't pull his strings anymore because Buffy believes in him. Buffy is back home listening to the others talking, in another room, about the situation and how badly she is hurt. She walks in as Giles tells them that he does not know if they can fight The First.
She agrees and says that they don't know how to fight it or when it will come, nor can they run or hide. She tells them that they can't pretend that it is not the end, because it is.
She tells them that the Hellmouth will swallow her, but that it will choke on her. She tells them that they are not going to wait for the end, as they always have, but that they are going on the offensive to draw The First out. When it comes, she plans to kill it herself. She tells them: "There's only one thing on this earth more powerful than evil and that's us."
